New Urbanists Honored

The Congress for the New Urbanism recognizes 17 projects in its 2006 Charter Awards program.

By Lynne Lavelle

On April 3, 2006, the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) announced the winners of its 2006 Charter Awards, honoring "the gold standard" in urban design and development. The program was created in 2001 to recognize plans and projects that both advance the principles of the Charter of New Urbanism and integrate with their surroundings to "improve the human experience."

This year, the awards were presented to 14 architectural firms and one school of architecture for their work on 17 outstanding projects. The main categories were: the Region, the Metropolis, the City and the Town; the Neighborhood, the District and the Corridor; the Block, the Street and the Building; plus a category for student/faculty submissions.

The recipients were: Cooper Robertson & Partners of New York, NY; Goody, Clancy and Associates of Boston, MA; Sasaki Associates, Inc., of Watertown, MA; the City of Vancouver, Canada; Gary White and Associates of Pretoria, South Africa; Design Collective, Inc., of Baltimore, MD; the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment; Torti Gallas and Partners, Inc., of Silver Spring, MD; Moule & Polyzoides, Architects and Urbanists, of Pasadena, CA; Meleca Architects, Inc., of Columbus, OH; Cook + Fox Architects, LLP, of New York, NY; Cox, RBGC, Architecture, Research and Urbanism, of Charlottesville, VA; Historical Concepts, Inc., of Peachtree City, GA; Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, NY; and the University of Maryland. The University of Miami was given an honorable mention.

Nine distinguished jurors reviewed more than 160 submissions before making their selections. They were: Dhiru Thadani, jury chair and principal of Ayers/Saint/Gross Architects + Planners; Peter Calthorpe, principal of Calthorpe Associates; Rick Chellman, principal of TND Engineering; Peter Hetzel, principal of Peter Hetzel Architecture + Urbanism; Linda Keane, architect and urban planner, of Studio 1032 and the Art Institute of Chicago; Leon Krier, architect and urban planner; Barbara Littenberg, partner at Peterson/Littenberg Architecture and Urban Design; Susan Parham, chair of the Council for European Urbanism and director of CAG Consultants; and Todd Zimmerman, co-managing director of Zimmerman/Volk Associates, Inc.

Dhiru Thadani said the portfolio of submissions had reached "a new high" and demonstrated New Urbanism's vast scope: "There were superb examples of infill projects that seamlessly integrated new and old buildings into existing neighborhoods. Additionally, there were projects that applied much-needed place-making to suburban and rural communities. The level of quality and skill reflected in each of these projects reaffirms my optimism that we can succeed in building better places where the next generation can live, work and play." TB
